Abstract
This research studies the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from personal cars in the Netherlands and if this sector can comply with the goals set in the European Green Deal, i.e. 55% reduction by 2030 and 90% reduction by 2050. This is done by a mixed method approach, using both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The latter studies which variables are of influence and conducts a forecast, while the former provides context and strengthens the quantitative results. The importance of this work is that it provides country-specific information. Most literature focuses on GHG emissions from personal cars and what needs to be done in general, but every country deals with different circumstances. Furthermore, this research contributes to the discussion of transport emissions, which is one of the few sectors that has shown increasing emissions over time, and considers the mitigation potential. The findings suggest that battery electric vehicles are seen as the solution to reduce GHG emissions and that the target of 2030 will most likely not be met, while the target of 2050 is within reach. However, the results also depend on how GHG emissions from personal cars are calculated.
