Abstract
Within the fast-changing business environment of today, companies need to be flexible in order to continuously adapt and respond to these changes. An agile way of working, since 2001 advocated for by the software development industry, is an appropriate way to achieve this. Whereas many theories and methodologies have been written about agility in software development, little empirical research has been conducted on how agility can be shaped in other industries. Therefore, the current research investigates in what way organisations in the insurance sector (as different from software development) shape agility into their organisation and which effects this has on the level of flexibility of an organisation. By means of a case study consisting of interviews and documents analyses, it was found that, instead of following one of the methods as prescribed in software development, Generali takes bits and pieces from several methods, adapts and builds upon them, as well as invents its own elements and roles. This mixture of different strategies, and the ability to change quickly between different methodologies, allows Generali to have an increased level of flexibility. With these findings, the current research adds to the literature on agility within other industries and may help organisations to shape a more agile way of working
