‘JUST JOKING?’ A quantitative research into satire’s ironical ability to set the political agenda

Abstract
Satire has operated as a political watchdog for many years. However, it seems that instead of mocking and criticizing the elite, satire has recently gained the ability to set the political agenda. In the literature, there is an ongoing debate on how strong the agenda-setting power of satire is, especially when it comes to setting the political agenda. In this thesis, the potential political agenda-setting power of satire will be analysed using a quantitative research, looking at the influence of the Dutch show Zondag met Lubach on setting the political agenda of the parliament. The items on the show are coded and analysed using a regression analysis. Findings suggest that satire indeed has the power to set the political agenda when issue-ownership is involved or when an item is highly polarized. Negatively framing a party has a reverse effect. So, satire is able to substantively affect the political agenda, although it is possible that the agenda-setting power is based on the theory of political parallelism, which raises questions about the Lubach-Illusion.
