Abstract
The concept of liberal peacebuilding has been at the center of debates within the field of International Relations and Peace Studies since the coining of the term in the Agenda for Peace (1992) and its prevalence within the international interventions. Assumed to be bearing the norms and values of the Western world, its main criticism is its unfitting nature to address grassroot causes of conflicts and install long-lasting peace within violent environment witnessing intricate and multi-leveled issues. The ambition of this paper is three-fold: drawing the landscape of debates surrounding the topic of liberal peacebuilding, unveiling the influence of the liberal peacebuilding in the case of the independence of South-Sudan and trying to participate to the debate through an adoption of a critical approach, the main contender of this mainstream peacebuilding. Through an analysis of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and its effects, it is highlighted that the critical standpoint towards liberal peacebuilding draws not only an accurate picture of its consequences, but also open potential for further amelioration of peacebuilding.
