Abstract

This thesis will attempt to show the threat that the rising power of Big Tech can form to American democracy. During the past decade technology companies have become more powerful than ever before. Companies such as Facebook and Google own enormous amounts of data about their users and can use all this data to steer the public debate and by doing so harm American democracy. Since 2018 American governmental institutions and agencies seem to have regained interest in the possible dangers that can be caused by Big Tech. This moment is marked by the outcome of the Cambridge Analytica Scandal, which exposed how the data collected by Big Tech companies can be used. This scandal was a well-needed wake-up call for lawmakers because their interest in Big Tech seemed to have declined after United States vs. Microsoft.
