Abstract
Through an analysis of similarities between the Roman games and those in The Hunger Games, and one of similarities between reality TV and the programming of the Hunger Games, it is evident that Suzanne Collins worries about audience desensitisation towards violent footage, caused by their skewed perception of real and unreal television as seen through the reactions following the footage of the Iraq war. To portray this worry, Collin’s version of the televised gladiator games is an annual celebration for the ‘audience’, demonstrating their desensitisation towards what is happening on screen while simultaneously showing how these games are broadcasted to illustrate the manipulation that happens behind the scenes. Additionally, these aspects will be analysed with regards to the Iraq war footage to emphasize how Collins’ concerns are justified based on real-life examples.
