Abstract
It is beneficial to both literary studies and medieval philology to apply ecocriticism to medieval literature, especially when focussing on the otherworldly realm that these medieval narratives can contain. In order to reveal the author’s perspective on nature, artificiality and the in between, an ecocritical approach is applied to the main locations in the lay “Sir Orfeo.” The research will be executed by means of a close reading of the source text combined with an analysis of secondary sources. The author’s perspective on nature, artificiality and the in between proves to be positive as long as man does not interfere with these locations. An exception to this conclusion is the author’s perspective on the fairy kingdom and activities that control nature.
