Abstract
This thesis investigates what kind of management and organization science remains after the many philosophically-informed critiques it has encountered over the past decades, by the likes of Critical Management Studies, Martin Parker, and Philosophy of Organization. Mapping and critically discussing these different engagements between management, organization and philosophy enables this study to provide a cartography of business school transformation proposals, which indicates what a management and organization science that has incorporated these foundational criticisms might look like. Throughout the thesis, it is argued that university-based business schools suffer from a variety of intellectual vices (such as naturalization or discursive closure) and unthoughts (related to, for example, the dark side of management and organizations, alternative forms of organization and philosophical questioning), and that if management and organization science wants to be a legitimate academic discipline, it should reconstruct or reinvent itself. To this end, three main proposals or scenarios are provided.
