Abstract:
Two volcanic eruptions in the years 536 and 540 and caused environmental, political and social problems in the late antique mediterranean. In this thesis these eruptions and there consequences were studied by comparing ancient contemporary sources and modern geological data. The question that was answered was as followed: What was the impact of the 536 and 540 volcanic eruptions on the Mediterranean climate and society in the years 536-540 and the following decades as can be found in sources by late-antique authors and newly found geological data?
