First or Second Language in Emotional Communication: The Use of Spanglish Code-Switching in Customer Reviews.

Abstract
Many people speak more than one language nowadays and this number of bilinguals is still growing. Bilinguals sometimes use their native and second language in the same conversation. This is known as code-switching. Much research has already been done on code-switching in oral discourse. However, the research on code-switching in written/online discourse is scarce. As online platforms are emerging, the importance of having research into this field is greater than ever. The present study investigates whether there is a relation between the emotionality of an online review and code-switching that is used. Moreover, the motivations behind code-switching for Spanish/English bilinguals are explored. The findings show that there is no relation between the emotionality and type of code-switching in a review. Next to that, the most prolific motivations to code-switch were to emphasize an opinion and to use a standard idiom of the second language. These results could help businesses to analyze the reviews of their consumers better in terms of rating and their intended emotion.
