Abstract
Background: Previous literature has recommended to specify the size of change, which necessitates adaptive performance, to further explain the construct. To this end, this study explored the prior unclear role of perceived novelty among professors adapting to the change to online teaching at the Radboud University. This novelty represents how much has changed, which is determined by individual perception. Methods: This study applied a qualitative approach to explore the role of perceived novelty in the adaptive process and performance. Interviews were held with professors to understand the adaptive process, and to discover the coherence of the concepts of interest. Results: A holistic conceptual model was developed from the data representing the adaptive process in this empirical context. The adaptive process occurred as a time course of overcoming novelty. The speed and ease by which novelty was overcome represented the adaptive performance. Various internal and external enablers and barriers were identified, which explain how the professors were able to overcome novelty. Conclusions: This study concludes that a holistic approach to the adaptive process can explain the adaptive performance in an innovative way. Future research can use this model to test its robustness in and across other empirical contexts and occupational groups.
