Abstract
As a result of social and political expectations, the energy sector is in the energy transition from conventional power generation and the use of fossil fuels to more sustainable ways of power generation, which causes changes in the management of current supply chains. A focus on sustainability in SSCM initiatives requires a proactive approach to enable capabilities to dynamically respond to the changing environment. This research creates more empirical insights into the role of supply chain leadership styles in SSCM initiatives on the development of dynamic capabilities. Besides, empirical insights into the connection between the dynamic capabilities are discussed. A qualitative single case study is conducted within a supply chain of a technology-driven, innovative energy company. A content analysis is conducted, in which Service Level Agreements, reports about socially responsible procurement within involved organizations and the collaboration with upstream and downstream partners in the particular project are analyzed. Subsequently, these documents are examined in-depth by conducting semi-structured interviews. This research – which applies dynamic capability theory lenses – enriches our understanding of the role of supply chain leadership in SSCM initiatives in the development of supply chain dynamic capabilities. Results show that applied leadership styles in supply chain initiatives differ between the development of the five different dynamic capabilities. Furthermore, by showing that dynamic capabilities are interdependent in the process, the study provides insight into how a focal company and its supply chain should design and configure the focus on individual capabilities in order to respond to the changing environment. Implications for organizations and suggestions for future research are proposed.
