Abstract
This research explored how teachers experience commitment conflicts in two different contexts Brazil and The Netherlands. Based on ten semi-structured interviews, this study found three common routes in which commitment conflicts can manifest. These paths are work/life balance conflicts, conflicts with friends and family and conflicts with supervisors, management and/or the schoolboards. Reasons for this experience of conflict varied between the three trajectories, yet all three were found to negatively affect a teacher’s ability to work and take pleasure in their personal time. The intensity of the conflicts played a role in what were found to be the consequences of commitment conflicts. Conflicts are experienced as escalating when these are not resolved. Individuals perceive no other option than to change their commitment bond into an acquiescence type bond. This type of change in the commitment system is found in general to affect bonds with each of the three pathways of conflict. Insights from this study can be used to further explore commitment conflicts, recognize, and prevent conflicts from developing.
