Abstract
Current literature forms an incomplete representation of the possible causes of political behavior in the process of strategic decision-making. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide new theoretical insights into antecedents of political behavior. It is theorized that four factors, being competence diversity, trust, centralization, and formalization, influence the occurrence of political behavior. Hereby, competence diversity is hypothesized to be positively related to political behavior, and trust, centralization, and formalization are expected to be negatively related to political behavior. Cross-sectional surveys are conducted and a multiple regression analysis of the obtained data is performed in order to determine whether the hypotheses are supported or rejected. The findings of this research indicate that trust is negatively related to political behavior, implicating that the higher the level of trust between decision-makers, the lower the level of political behavior in the process of strategic decision-making. Therefore, organizations striving to decrease political behavior should try to increase the level of trust in decision-making teams. No support has been found for the relationships between competence diversity and political behavior, centralization and political behavior, and formalization and political behavior.
