Abstract
Kapoutsis and Thanos (2018) state that future researchers should dig deeper into the factors that can moderate positively or negatively, the relation between politics and various organizational outcomes. This research is devoted to exploring this relation. More specifically, this research has explored the link between political actions and episodic interventions. To study the relation between political actions and organizational outcomes the following research question was formulated: “How does the use of political actions by the intervention infrastructure influence the process of episodic interventions?”
This research used a qualitative strategy that is of an inductive character to answer the research question. Furthermore, this research used a multiple case study strategy whereby an episodic intervention is defined as a case. To collect data on these cases nine consultants who have performed episodic interventions were the main data source. The method used to collect data in this research was semi-structured interviews.
The main finding is this research is that the members of the organization influence the process of episodic interventions by using influence tactics, which differentiate in between the phases of the intervention. The used influence tactics differ in between phases because in each phase different conditions apply. Furthermore, there are four types of consequences of the use influence tactics for the process and outcome of the episodic intervention. The encountered consequences are: delay, acceleration, adaptation, and discontinuation of the episodic intervention.
