Abstract
Education for Sustainable Development aims to provide students with the right knowledge and skills to achieve a sustainable future. However, knowledge does not always lead to pro-environmental behaviour (PEB). The aim of this research is to determine to what extent the PEB of students, regarding reducing meat consumption and separating waste, corresponds with the sustainably oriented actions of the Radboud University. This research is based on Ajzen’s theory of planned behaviour, which assumes that PEB is predicted by intention, which is in turn influenced by the factors attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control. Based on the literature review, the factors environmental knowledge, environmental concern, actual control, and values are included in this model. The model was tested with Radboud University students and by in-depth interviews with Radboud University employees. The results show that the Radboud University is already influencing perceived behavioural control, action-related knowledge, actual control and environmental concern, which are important factors to influence the PEB of students. However, subjective norm, which turns out to be the most important predictor of the PEB of students, is not yet included in the sustainably oriented actions of the Radboud University.
