Abstract
This research uses qualitative methods in order to find an answer on how inhabitants of rural areas can be stimulated to use smart mobility transport modes. On the basis of a case study of the Brabantian Kempen region in the south of the Netherlands, a research is conducted in order to find possible motives and resistances of the potential target groups for these innovative mobility alternatives. These mobility alternatives are the result of the SMARA program which has the purpose to strengthen the mobility in the Kempen and to connect this region better to Brainport Eindhoven. Theories on environmental behaviour and sustainable- and smart mobility have formed the base of the interview guides and the observation scheme. Interviews with local stakeholders and the observations of small villages gave in-depth insights in the mobility needs for the inhabitants and a potential target group for the proposed mobility alternatives. On the basis of this information, a number of conditions have been drawn up in order to achieve a successful implementation of innovative mobility alternatives. These proposed conditions concern both physical and more psychological measures.
