Abstract
When looking at the history of Christian mission, a turning point is evident around the 6th and 7th century. The missionary styles of Saint Columbanus and Saint Boniface are key elements to this turning point, and it is important to look at who was more successful and why they had a lasting impact. Columbanus’ missionary style was the peregrinatio, and his missionary work came about as a byproduct. Boniface’s missionary style was to align himself with the papacy in Rome and stay in constant contact and defer to the pope’s will, as a result his missionary work was a direct engagement. Overall, Boniface was more successful because of the lasting impact of his work through expanding the influence of the papacy and the Roman Catholic Church throughout Europe.
