Abstract

Gaining enough vocabulary to understand others and to express one's own thoughts is a challenging task for second language learners. One of the ways this task could be facilitated is through the use of music, which can elicit the dual coding effect. This study set out to investigate whether learning words in a second language in a sung manner would lead to better learning outcomes than learning in a spoken manner. It was expected that participants learning with a song would perform better than participants learning with a spoken version. The results did not confirm this hypothesis and showed a trend towards the opposite effect. The concreteness of the words did not influence the learning outcomes either. The study concluded that the lack of an effect of music may have been due to the short and simple learning phase and the fact that the same melody was used for all words.
