Abstract

This thesis researched the impact of peoples norms and values together with demographic characteristics like age and educational level on refugee perception in the Netherlands. It used the Extended integrative threat theory (EITT) by Tartakovsky and Walsh (2016). This EITT states that certain personal values, like hedonism, universalism, tradition, power and security values influence the way people view refugees as either more of a threat or benefit. This thesis expanded upon that theory by adding demographic characteristics to the equation as well, the following demographic characteristics were used: age, educational level, gender, overseas birth of an individual and political affiliation. To test if these demographic characteristics together with the personal values truly influence refugee perception multiple regression was used. The results being that universalism values influence refugee perception, as well as hedonism values partially explaining refugee perception. Among the demographic characteristics age and educational level were big determinants of refugee perception, while political affiliation could partially be used to determine refugee perception. The remaining personal values and demographic characteristics could not explain refugee perception.
