Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate what and how contextual factors within the profession of e-health experts influence the relation between their job demands and control opportunities and quality of working life. The relevance of this study is based on the fact that e-health experts play an important role within the healthcare environment these days, and given that they encounter different complexities with regard to interoperability, it is the question how these complexities affect their quality of working life. A good quality of working life for this profession is important for the development of e-health within the healthcare environment. Furthermore, the assumptions and applicability of Karasek’s Job Demand-Control model (1979) is investigated for this profession within their work context, wherefore the present study contributes to new knowledge about the applicability of this quite old model within new contexts. The present study is conducted in the form of a qualitative comparative interview study with three Dutch e-health organizations. Based on the findings it appears that the work context with interoperability and remote working is a relevant factor in determining the quality of working life of e-health experts. Given that these relations are in line with the assumptions of Karasek’s (1979) model, this model seems relatively applicable within this new context. Despite these confirmations of Karasek’s assumptions (1979), the simplicity of the model comes to light, given that not all contextual factors are declared by the model.
