Abstract

Family businesses are a much-researched topic in the literature. According to existing literature, family businesses have a long-term strategy due to the transfer of a financially healthy company. To find insights considering this topic, this research focussed on the relation of collaboration intensity and competitive advantages and how family involvement influences this relationship and outcomes. A mixed-methods study was conducted of 203 survey respondents and six interview respondents, using data of the European Manufacturing Survey 2018 to conduct a multiple linear regression and a logistic regression, combined with semi-structured interviews to investigate the content of the assumed relationships. A distinction has been made in competitive advantages namely short-term competitiveness and long-term competitiveness. The study found no support for the relationship between external collaborations on competitive advantages and firm performance in family-managed businesses. The findings and the suggestions for future research will help to understand and scope the volume of the literature in this field.
