Abstract

In this study was investigated association between satisfaction/ frustration of psychological need for relatedness and ADHD symptoms and weather this association is mediated through self-control. In order to investigate this a community sample of 42 primary school children aged 8,4 to 13 years was used. It was expected that satisfaction of relatedness need would lead to less ADHD symptoms and that frustration of this need would lead to more ADHD symptoms. Additionally, it was expected that effect of relatedness need frustration would be stronger than effect of relatedness need satisfaction. Finally it was expected that self-control would (partially) mediate the connection between relatedness need and ADHD symptoms. Results show that satisfaction of relatedness need is negatively connected with ADHD symptoms. No mediating effect of self-control was found. Frustration of need for relatedness did not correlate with ADHD symptoms, nor was found the mediating effect of self-control. There were methodological and sample problems that can likely explain the absence of the expected effects of relatedness need frustration and self-control. In conclusion this is the first study to show this link between relatedness satisfaction on ADHD symptoms specifically.
