Abstract

The city center is a place of connectedness, socialization, and communication. However, the city centers are declining in attractiveness and visitation numbers. One aspect of the city center that does not seem to be in a decline is catering. This research aims to find out what influence catering has on making the city center more attractive for visitation. A questionnaire was used to ask for people’s motivation for visitation and their opinions on the city center and the catering offer. The questions were used to find out the connection between city center attractiveness and catering offer, and what impact catering offer has on motivating people to visit the center. Data from Locatus was also used to see if the physical number of catering establishments had an impact on city center attractiveness and visitation. The results indicate that catering offer has a minimal influence on overall city center attractiveness. Having a more attractive catering offer does increase the likelihood of people visiting the city center with catering as their main motivation, but overall visitation numbers for catering were low. The results contradict the literature and imply that catering is unlikely to revive the city center.
