Abstract

Habermas demonstrated that social media does not protect the inclusivity and deliberative quality of the public sphere. He proposed that social media should be held accountable for the content that circulates on their platforms similar to the way traditional media is liable for the content they distribute. However, Habermas did not recognize that the public sphere of social media is shaped by a fully operational, omnipresent and invisible control of models which orchestrate behavioural patterns for the sake of profit via digital infrastructure. In other words, he understated the extent to which our lifeworld has been colonized by the capitalist imperatives of social media. This cannot be solved by content curation but requires intervention on the level of the infrastructure.
