Abstract

This essay pertains to the imperial coronation rituals as used by Louis the Pious (778-840). Louis had this ritual performed twice, once by his father Charlemagne in 813 and once by pope Stephen IV. It will be examined how these rituals were used to expand imperial propaganda on the place of the emperor in the Carolingian empire.
