Abstract

This study investigates the impact of quantified feedback provided by fitness trackers on motivation towards physical activity. This is done by exploring how users of fitness trackers perceive the quantified feedback in relation the need for competence and the need for autonomy. The research is conducted through a qualitative research method in the form of semi-structured interviews. The results demonstrate different factors that influence the perception of quantified feedback. The perception of feedback is heavily influenced by whether users pursue a performance goal. Positive feedback increases sense of competence and improves intrinsic motivation towards physical activity, whereas negative feedback decreases sense of competence and impairs intrinsic motivation towards physical activity. Users without a performance goal do not experience feedback as negative and do not experience this negative impact on intrinsic motivation towards physical activity. Moreover, quantified feedback that is perceived as a small increase on sense of autonomy does not necessarily improve intrinsic motivation, whereas feedback reducing sense of autonomy does negatively impact motivation towards PA. Differences in perception relate to the type of activity, the initial motivation towards this activity, and the amount of engaging in physical activity. To conclude, quantified feedback can enhance motivation towards physical activity, but this is dependent on several factors that influence the perception of the feedback. This study is conducted with respondents who primarily have a background in high-level sports. Future research could explore whether the factors that influence perception found in this study are present in different contexts as well.
