Abstract
This thesis investigates the differences between contemporary and historical depictions of fairies and how ideas and beliefs on fairies have changed throughout history, especially in the Middle Ages, Early Modern period, Victorian era and contemporary history. Medieval romance and possible origins of fairy folklore will be examined, after which Early Modern cultural and religious context will be related to depictions of fairies, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be analysed. The Industrial- and Scientific Revolutions in the Victorian era will be related to the era’s views on fairies and finally, media from contemporary history will be looked at to determine the current trends in fairy depictions.
