Abstract
Overweight among children can be seen as a huge problem in society. Besides, unsustainable western food systems are related to global climate change. This qualitative study investigates limitations and opportunities associated with changing food choice behavior of pupils at schools in the Achterhoek region towards making more healthy and sustainable food choices. Interviews with school employees and pupils are used. The results show that the most important factors limiting pupils from choosing (more) healthy and sustainable foods at school are the lack of knowledge about these foods and their high prices in school canteens. Schools are to some extent concerned with healthy nutrition in canteens and education. Generally, less attention is given to sustainable nutrition. The most important recommendation is to develop national policy on including healthy and sustainable nutrition in canteens and education. As this takes time, schools should already gain (more) knowledge about healthy and sustainable nutrition and start changing their current practices. The topic of healthy and sustainable nutrition should be integrated in education programs, in theory as well as practical lessons. The assortment in school canteens should be optimized in terms of health, sustainability, price, and taste. If necessary, the government should support schools with subsidies.
