Abstract
The majority of workplace accidents are caused by human error. The need for action to mitigate
this issue has led to the development of a variety of safety programs. One such program is
SafeStart. One of SafeStart’s instruments is the introduction of so-called Rate-your-State talks;
short conversations, guided by a protocol. They are suggested in order for individuals to reflect
on their mental state and become aware of associated risks in order to prevent casualties. The
study at hand aimed to increase employees’ intention to start Rate-your-State talks by means of a
flyer, presented as part of an online survey. Modelled around the Theory of Planned Behavior, a
variety of techniques were used, aiming to influence attitudes and social norms. The intervention
did not have a significant effect on employees’ intention to engage in Rate-your-State.
Suggestions for future research are given.
