This thesis analyzes the internal struggle between different factions of the followers of the quietist Salafī leader Rabīʿ b. Hādī al-Madkhalī in Libya in the period of the civil war between 2011 and 2020. The main question that will be answered in this thesis is: to what extent is the Madkhalī movement undergoing an ideological transformation because of their involvement in the political conflict in Libya? By taking their core concept of ‘obedience to the ruler’ (ṭāʿat walī al-amr) as a point of departure, I have analyzed the discussion within the Madkhalī movement on the Libyan civil war by using primary Arabic sources of its most prominent scholars.en_US
