Abstract

The primary focus of the thesis revolves around exploring how embodied empathy of an ill physician operates within the patient-physician relationship. Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of the body schema, intentional arc, and Gestalt theory, along with Dan Zahavi’s multi-level phenomenological account of empathy, serve as theoretical frameworks. Phenomenological analyses of patient-physician relationship cases are provided to further elucidate these philosophical concepts in relation to the thesis question. The general conclusion is that illness can act as a Gestalt and influence the body schema an intentional arc in such a way that it also alters the embodied empathy of a physician as well as that of the patient, leading to a multifaceted influence on the patient-physician relationship.
