Abstract
This study presents an analysis of contemporary, Dutch critiques of children’s books. The aim of the analysis was to make a comparison between traditional literary criticism from newspapers and online literary criticism from websites and weblogs. The comparison is based on the frequencies and contents of different types of statements found in the critiques. Using an analytical model for literary criticism (Model-Ros) a total of eighty critiques from traditional or online sources were analysed. A quantitative analysis shows that traditional critiques are shorter on average than online critiques. Descriptive and informative statements are the most predominant group of statements in both traditional and online reviews. Traditional critiques contain more statements that discuss literature as a system and evaluative statements used by the critic to judge the quality of the discussed book. The statements on literature as a system in traditional critiques show more of the critics’ judgement. Additionally, the selected sources for traditional reviews form a more coherent group than the online sources.
