Abstract
This thesis introduces a new gender model that takes contemporary women´s changing roles into account. Both Connell and Messerschmidt’s and Schippers’s seminal gender frameworks postulate that hegemonic masculinity is necessarily dominant over all forms of femininity. The new gender model will build upon these two frameworks and present an alternative model in which hegemonic femininity is independent from its relationship to hegemonic masculinity.
Hegemonic femininity will constitute a combination of traditional and nontraditional feminine qualities. Women who embody these qualities will obtain status, power, and dominance – in other words; true hegemony.
This model is applied to the protagonist of The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen. A literary analysis of the book will serve as a case study to determine which of the three models offers a more suitable conceptualization for discerning femininity.
