Abstract
Despite previous research, it is still unclear which factors determine the lecture attendance
rate of students and how it can be increased. 16 predictor variables of lecture attendance were
investigated in a preliminary study. Based on the results, a process model was developed and
three predictors were selected; the desire to master the material, the extrinsic motivation by
academic rewards, and the experience with the lecturer. These three predictors were
manipulated in an intervention in the second study by the use of a video. The previous lecture
attendance was included as a covariate. The intervention did significantly increase the lecture
attendance. A significant effect of the previous lecture attendance on the current attendance
was also found. The intervention group and the control group differed significantly in their
desire to master the material and the experience with the lectures but not in their extrinsic
motivation. The desire to master the material and the experience with the lecturer therefore
predict lecture attendance. Additional research is needed to replicate these findings and to
develop effective interventions in order to increase attendance on the long-term.
