Abstract

Warungs are informal eating establishments for the lower income in Indonesia. These warungs can function as third spaces, meaning that they provide a place to spend time outside of work and one’s house. This research focuses on the relevance of warungs as third spaces beyond providing provisioning for Semarang students. By interviewing students and warung employees’, different personal perspectives on this topic came to light. Warungs have been found not to be competition of restaurants, in being a third space, due to different prices and comfort. Most students do, however, prefer restaurants over warungs as a third space, due to these higher level of comfort. Warungs are more preferable due to affordability and convenience. Warungs’ biggest competition is other warungs. Cafés might even support warungs’ existence, due to students’ need to economize by going to warungs. Warungs biggest relevance remains in being an affordable food place, not so much as a third space.
