Abstract

In organisations the focus mainly lies on green growth, bioenergy and geo-engineering, which includes economic growth. This is problematic since growth will keep increasing our consumption, as will the pressure on the natural resources. To secure a safe operating space for humanity, it is important to conduct climate-proofing management research, where sustainability is seen as operating within planetary boundaries. Knowing which factors are influencing managers in implementing sustainability practices can help as a starting point for an organisation to operate within planetary boundaries. The study consists of a research on the drivers and barriers for managers to implement sustainability practices within their organisation. This qualitative system dynamics case study in the energy sector uses document analysis and semi-structured interviews to create a causal loop diagram (CLD). SD is a methodology that aims to understand the behaviour over time of complex problems by mapping out underlying causal relations. The qualitative overview of the interrelations assists to understand the problem better by focusing on circular causality and feedback loops. Resulting in an overview of the drivers, barriers, interrelations between drivers and barriers that influence managers in the organisation to implement ecological sustainability practices within their business model.
