Abstract

This thesis analyses the depiction of femininity and the construction of identity in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go. The novels will be compared and contrasted with regards to the matter at hand by means of the themes of agency, individuality, rebellion, body autonomy, reproduction, and sexuality. This analysis will reveal how both authors use the depiction of femininity and the construction of identity to convey a broader message. Whereas Atwood attempts to criticise American contemporary society through the limitation of femininity and identity, Ishiguro attempts to blur the line between humans and clones through a conveniently limited depiction of femininity and the forced expression of identity.
