Abstract

Currently, the biggest health problem is physical inactivity. Especially in the work environment there is a lot of physical inactivity due to the sedentary nature of work-related tasks. mHealth apps can pose as a way of increasing physical activity. With the research question: How do employees experience the usage of a mHealth app in their work environment?, this is researched. The data is gathered via semi-structured interviews, based with a theoretical lens based on the framework of Mick and Fournier (1998) on technology paradoxes. The goal of the research is to have an in-depth look in the paradoxical tensions, experiences and reactions towards those tensions concerned with the usage of mHealth apps by employees. Five paradoxes, one unintended consequence and five coping strategies are found. Overall, mHealth apps are experienced as a tool to use for more awareness and a increased physical activity. However, on the negative aspects is elaborated the most. Based on these findings, theoretical contributions in several fields of research, and societal contributions per stakeholders are made.
