This thesis discusses the representation of the ancient Canaanite deity Baal in the Old Testament. The name Baal returns over ninety times in the Old Testament as a whole. When mentioning the deity, the Old Testament often condemns Baal and the worship of Baal, more so than other deities. Even though multiple other deities, such as the Canaanite El, Anat and Asteroth, get mentioned in the Old Testament, no other deity represents aspects of Jewish identity in the Old Testament as well as Baal does. This thesis focusses on the following question: what is the role of the deity Baal in the Old Testament?
