dc.description.abstractWhereas the rise of prostitution in the 19e century raised many socio-political issues, it is a widely represented subject in painting of the 19e and early 20ste century. This thesis examines through feminist and curatorial theories how the Musée d'Orsay through curation translates 19e and 20ste -century thought into contemporary thought in the exhibition Splendours & Miseries: Images of Prostitution in France, 1850-1910 (2015). The application of feminist discourse to the analysis of the socio-political context in the 19e century shows that there are parallels between visions of prostitution then and now. The regulation of prostitution introduced in the 19e century can be linked to liberal feminism advocating legalization while the subsequent abolition can be linked to the radical feminism of Evelina Giobbe advocating the abolition of prostitution. By applying curation theory of Tyburczy in the analysis of the exhibition, it becomes clear that in their curation, the Musée d'Orsay encourages a voyeuristic choreography in visitors by using the curatorial concept of the period room. Patriarchal structures are perpetuated through this voyeuristic choreography causing the museum to reject the dismantling of these structures.
