Abstract
De Wallen, Amsterdam’s largest and most well-known red-light district, has developed into a major tourist attraction. Due to tension between residents and visitors, the area has come under increasing pressure. Local residents try to cope with contemporary tourism-related problems in several ways in order to keep their living environment livable. The objective of this research was to gain insights into the ‘self-help’ of residents in their fight against nuisance. This master thesis focused on the topic of residential action in De Wallen and provided an overall story describing tactical and strategic residential actions. The data were gathered by observations, semi-structured interviews, and an analysis of policy documents.
