Abstract

AI speech synthesis has seen rapid development in recent years, allowing for the creation of highly realistic synthetic voices. While this technology has many promising applications in virtual assistants, gaming, and entertainment, it also raises important questions about the genuineness of synthetic speech and the potential risks of its misuse. This study investigates the authenticity of AI-generated speech through a perceptual online experiment, where participants rated the naturalness, expressiveness, and tone of speech clips from both real and AI-synthesized voices of Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. Additionally, the study explores the risks of voice deepfakes, including their potential use for fraud, impersonation, and disinformation. Emphasis is placed on the need for safeguards such as authentication mechanisms and ethical guidelines to prevent misuse. This research provides insight into the state of AI speech synthesis, its implications, and the importance of responsible development and regulation.
