Abstract
As many people are currently working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, employees are feeling less connected and satisfied with their company and team. It is well-established that job satisfaction is predicted by supervisor support and that this relationship is mediated via occupational stress. This study aims to determine if coworker support can moderate the relationship of supervisor support on occupational stress. To test this, an online survey was distributed to employees of the Dutch medical technology company Philips. Participants’ responses were analyzed using model 7 of the SPSS macro PROCESS. The findings confirmed the mediating role of stress on the relationship between supervisor support and job satisfaction. Further, our results showed that the strength of the relationship between supervisor support and occupational stress was not moderated by coworker support. One reason for this may be that coworker support is not strong enough to change the strength of this relationship as employees are often untrained in coworker support methods. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that companies could benefit from training their employees in social support strategies. Additionally, future research should hone in on the role that social support plays in the working environment.
