Abstract

In theoretical modeling, communication is often studied between simulated agents who speak truthfully and have the same goal in mind. But what happens if one of the agents does not have the correct information at his disposal or intentionally supplies false information? The introduction of such agents is expected to add a relevant dimension to communication in which agents must anticipate what kind of agents they are dealing with and act accordingly. For the purpose of furthering this eld, lying and lie detection in pragmatic communication were modeled. Agents used RSA (Rational Speech Act) to communicate, and a set of beliefs and a coherence network to detect lies. Modeled agents who were less opinionated were less likely to detect a lie, but this e ect largely disappeared when modeled agents made assumptions to ll in empty beliefs.
