Abstract
This thesis emphasises diversity in beauty standards within the fashion industry. Fashion magazines like Vogue a re important mediums in the communication of beauty in modern times and people can get deeply affected by the images they consume. The lack of diversity within the fashion world has been an ongoing debate and it is often claimed that more people should get included and represented in fashion images. For that reason, it is essential to understand and analyse changes in beauty and diversity and which beauty standards dominate Western societies. Therefore, the research questions of this thesis are: How did (the representation of) beauty standards change on the covers of Vogue, in the last ten years? To what extent did the covers of Vogue become more inclusive and diverse? In order to examine these questions the people featured on diverse Vogue covers have been analysed. Physical appearance, facial expression, clothing and people’s poses represent modern ideas about beauty and what it should look like. The outcomes of this thesis will show that, in comparison to previous years, there are small changes in beauty standards as depicted on the covers of Vogue. Yet, diversity is slowly finding its way into the fashion industry by including more people with different faces and bodies.
