Abstract
The term Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are implemented in project designs that aim to address societal, environmental challenges. Currently the issue has arisen that NbS are implemented and viewed in many different perspectives, causing an international discussion on the validity of NbS. This study was conducted for to bring clarity upon the different discourses and how they influence implementations of NbS. Three case-studies of programs from the IUCN NL office were conducted through a discourse analysis in which three different discourse pillars on NbS were researched: (1) source- (goal, aim and definitions), (2) process- (governance values), (3) substance discourse (world values). Interviews and project reports were conducted from the IUCN NL partners. This research proves that different discourses do influence the methods used for NbS, as they are adapted to the environment of the program. Overall, this led to five recommendations that are urged upon any institution that applies NbS, with specific focus for the IUCN NL office: (1) understand each other’s program and it’s landscape, (2) Improve monitoring, (3) adapt your collaboration technique to your environment (4) follow the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions when realising an NbS project, (5) do not use NbS as a sole solution to all environmental/social challenges.
