Abstract
The Asian Values debate instigated by Lee Kuan Yew has had a significant influence on
Singaporean society and its literature. This research looks at the novels of Catherine Lim and
Dave Chua, Little Ironies: Stories of Singapore (1978) and Gone Case (1997), and how they
show and critically reflect the Asian values debate. The debate is limited inside the city-state,
but with close reading of these works of fiction is it possible to navigate the pitfalls
surrounding Singapore’s rather absent civil society. It is one of the few options to study the
effects of the Asian values from the point of view of Singapore’s citizenry and will potentially
give an overview of the developments and implications of the debate.
