Abstract
The sharing economy is marketed as a promising way to provide services in a more sustainable way. Camptoo is a camper sharing platform that operates in Europe and Australia. They profile themselves as ‘the Airbnb for campers’. This research aims to produce an analysis of the environmental sustainability of the change in behaviour that is caused by camper sharing through Camptoo’s platform. Through interviews and a survey among lessors and lessees it was found that on the one hand, several behavioural factors contribute to the environmental sustainability of campersharing. Optimization decreases the CO2 emissions per day of rent and campersharing is a more sustainable substitute to other types of vacation. However, this positive effect is reduced by the negative impact of the small amount of additional trips that are made and the accelerated degradation of the camping vehicles.
