Abstract

This paper examines the motivations for being on the board of a local energy initiative in the Netherlands. LEIs contribute to a more sustainable energy system, while at the same time involving and benefiting the local community. One of the three success factors for LEIs are their board members, the project champions. This research has focused on their motivations and aspirations. This to gain a better understanding on how to attract board members and adapt the structure of the initiative to their motivations and visions, thereby possibly making them more effective. The theory of planned behavior has been applied as a theoretical basis. The possibility of discovering other motivations has also been included in this research. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted to gain insight into their motivations. It was found that the attitude, perceived behavior control and other motivations were important motivations to be on the board. The results relating to the subjective norm were too diverse to confirm its importance for this behavior. Based on the results, some recommendations for society have been made, mainly focusing on informing people about the broad range of impacts and motives to be on the board of a local energy initiative.
